Police identified the man as 65-year-old Ricardo John Peters who had been missing since October.
On Oct. 24, Peters suffered a medical emergency and was transported by medics to Riverside Regional Medical Center, after his treatment he was released but never returned home. On Nov. 2, a friend of Peters called police to report him missing, indicating he may be in medical danger.
Last Saturday morning, a Dominion Power worker saw his body in the water while in the area of Gatewood Road and Warwick Boulevard, according to authorities.
The Newport News Fire Department's dive team recovered the body behind Riverside Hospital, said police spokeswoman Holly McPherson.
The medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.
