State police search dogs, interviews with friends and a scouring of social media have yet to produce any clues as to the whereabouts of missing 14-year-old Khia Lake who was last seen the night of Wednesday, Aug. 20, local police said Monday.
At an afternoon news conference Monday, West Warwick Police Chief Col. Richard Silva said that despite the ongoing investigation and collaboration with other police departments, officials are no closer to finding out where Lake might be.
They said that the teenager was last seen by her mother last Wednesday night at about 10:30 p.m. and she presumed that her daughter went to bed after that. The girl was not in her room when her mother went to wake her up the next morning and police were called, Silva said. Silva and Major John Magiera provided some more details of Khia's disappearance and the fact that they do not believe she has a cell phone with her.
Since then, police have talked to people who say they saw Khia walking in the vicinity of West Warwick Avenue Wednesday night.
That street is abutted by a number of narrow side streets that lead either into the woods or to the rural the Washington Secondary Bike Path which runs along an abandoned rail line.
Silva said that state police dogs and their handlers have been searching those areas as well as some ponds in the vicinity since Sunday.
Magiera said that local police have had contact with the family before in instances where the teenager has run away but she has always returned home.
He said that there was nothing unusual about her interactions with her family the night she disappeared.
Detective Sgt. Scott Amaral said that investigators have not been able to find any digital "footprint" of Khia on the Internet since her disappearance. Shhe shared a cell phone with her mother, police said, and her mother has the phone.
The last postings on social media by Khia were dated a couple of days before her disappearance, he said, and there was nothing to indicate that she was planning to leave.
Silva said that police have made aware of some "personal issues" Khia might have been dealing with recently but said he could not elaborate because of the ongoing investigation and search.
"We're looking for any credible information," he said. "And we're trying to find any lead we can in locating her."
