Late Wednesday night police located the Kent Hinkson's car on Williamsburg Road, about five miles from his house.
However, Hinkson was not with his car. Police are still searching for him.
Hinkson, 71, was reported missing about 6:30 p.m. Monday after not returning home from running errands, his wife, Jeline Hinkson, said.
Family and friends were encouraged by the discovery of Hinkson's car.
"Well, this is breakthrough, it's something we've been praying for," Brian Ellison, a family friend of the Hinksons', said Thursday afternoon. "Anything that's a step closer to finding him and bringing him home is a positive step."
Finding the car on the 1800 block of Williamsburg Road also gave the family an idea of where to start canvassing next. Ellison said Thursday they were going around that neighborhood and knocking on doors to spread the word.
Even though finding the car was seen as a step closer to finding Hinkson, it wasn't a complete answer.
"I think it's an answer, it's not the answer everybody wanted … but it's a step closer," Ellison said.
Monday night after he was reported missing, Durham police investigators were able to locate his cellphone near Hillsborough Road and close to Bennett Place, where Hinkson often volunteered.
Hinkson is a lay pastor at All Saints Church in Durham. The family's faith along with community support has helped keep their spirits up since Monday.
"It's just been life-saving (having that support)," Jeline Hinkson told The Herald-Sun on Tuesday.
"It's been holding us together," Beth Perry, Kent's daughter, added. "They're putting our focus back on God. He's our help in all of this."
"And he's the one who knows where Kent is, and he'll get him back to us in some way," Jeline Hinkson said.
Ellison and Hinkson's family praised the work of the Durham Police Department in their efforts to help find the missing man.
"The Durham Police Department has been fantastic," Ellison said. "There are a lot of people working on it."
