Missing campers found dead in SUV following fatal crash in Tillamook State Forest
The following is a press release from the Tillamook County Sheriff's Office concerning two men who had been missing since leaving their campsite at Cedar Creek Campground in the Tillamook State Forest on Tuesday, Aug. 19:
At about 8:15 p.m., searchers located Justin Norton and Nicholas Santangelo deceased due to a fatal vehicle crash in the Diamond Mill OHV area, in the Tillamook State Forest, off of State Highway 6. Their vehicle left a narrow gravel road and rolled several hundred feet down a steep hillside, both were ejected from the SUV.
The SUV was found in an area with heavy growth and trees making detection difficult for searchers on the ground, and nearly impossible to locate by aircraft. Due to the loss of light, the recovery of the victims and the investigation will resume at first light in the morning and will require a High Angle Rope Team, and some preparation time for the technical recovery and investigation.
