Earthly Body Located: Carl Salayer, 67 - California

The decomposing body found east of the Mount Woodson Golf Club in Ramona was that of a 67-year-old Alzheimer's patient who went missing in the area more than a week earlier, authorities said Friday.

Carl Lee Salayer was last seen June 16 when he went to bed at his home in the 17000 block of Handlebar Road near Highland Valley Road, according to the sheriff's department and the county Medical Examiner's Office. He apparently left between 2:30 and 6:30 a.m. the following day and was reported missing, according to sheriff's officials.

Authorities considered Salayer's disappearance to be critical due to his physical condition -- he required medicine and had a feeding tube -- and searched the area for several days.

Deputies responding to a report of a foul odor in a heavily vegetated field in the 18000 block of Chablis Road near Whirlwind Lane found Salayer's body shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to the sheriff's department and the county Medical Examiner's Office.

Officials with the Medical Examiner's Office have conducted an autopsy, but have listed Salayer's cause of death as "pending," meaning that determination of the cause and/or manner of his death is contingent upon toxicological or other tests or a further investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, authorities said.
