It's been almost a week since anyone has talked with 22-year old Benjamin Jones. The Morehouse College student disappeared a day before his parents thought he was set to graduate.
Roswell police are investigating the case, since that's where he and his father lived. But the last place his cell phone indicated he might have been, was near Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta on Saturday.
Police checked to see if he or any other unidentified male matching his description might have been admitted, but found nothing.
Jones' cell phone is no longer sending out a signal. His credit card hasn't been used since someone bought gas at a Quick Trip near his home in Roswell early Saturday morning. Police say if it is him in the surveillance video, he appears alone.
"There was no reason to indicate he was in any kind of distress," said Officer Zachary Frommer.
Still, Frommer says there's enough to his disappearance to investigate. Jones' father, Richard, says none of it makes sense.
"I am convinced that he is in trouble," he said.
Jones' family had started to arrive in town for his graduation ceremony on Sunday. It was only after he disappeared, they learned he wasn't on the list to walk.
"He didn't fill out a graduation application that was the explanation I got. And he didn't pay that fee. That fee was 800 plus bucks," said his dad, indicating he believed it was an administrative problem, not an issue with his son's grades.
"There's nothing other than that to indicate emotional problems, no history of anything," added Frommer.
Even if Jones was struggling in school, his dad says he'd weathered enough disappointments in life to know he could bounce back from this too. Jones had desperately wanted to play college football, a dream that never came true.
Before the trail went cold near Piedmont Hospital, police pinged his cell phone at the Embassy Suites in Buckhead. His father looked, but there was no sign of Jones or his car. It's described as a gold 1999 Lexus SUV. Police are still reviewing the hotel's surveillance video.
"It's one of the most faith testing experiences we've ever had," said Jones.
The last person to talk with Jones, appears to be a good friend from high school. He reached him by phone and says Jones seemed rushed, but normal. He told him he was checking out a job opportunity.
If anyone has seen Jones or his vehicle since Saturday, they're asked to call Roswell Police at 770-640-4100.
