A body found off a roadway in northern Red River County Wednesday night has been tentatively identified as that of Troy Gray Jr. of Paris, who had been missing approximately three weeks, Paris Police Chief Bob Hundley said Thursday.
"Based on tattoo descriptions, we believe the person found is Mr. Gray. The deceased has been sent to the Dallas area for forensic examination and positive identification," Hundley said.
Gray would have observed his 30th birthday on April 22. He had been missing for almost three weeks.
Paris police were contacted by the Texas Rangers Wednesday evening regarding the discovery of a deceased person in Red River County, the chief said.
"The Red River County sheriff's office had received a call from an individual who reported seeing the deceased person off of a roadway. Paris detectives and Texas Rangers met with the family of Troy Gray late (Wednesday) night regarding the discovery," Hundley continued.
Gray, who was also known as 'Leck', was last reported seen at his home in Paris around 2 a.m. on Thursday, April 10. The clothing Gray had on when he left the residence had been described as a polo type shirt, dark shorts and a cap, according to authorities. He was 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Lamar County Sheriff's Office deputies located Gray's vehicle — a 2014 white Chevy Malibu — badly burned on a county road south of Paris the day after he was last seen, leading investigators to suspect foul play.
The family had offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to Gray's location or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in a crime relating to his disappearance.
The Paris police chief had given an update on Tuesday into his department's investigation.
Information had been received from the community, and his department was "following those leads as far as they will go," Hundley said. But much of the information "is in the form of hearsay to the second and third level. However, this and all information is followed up on."
