A 67-year-old Somers grandfather with Parkinson's disease and dementia was found dead Thursday, about a week after he went missing — and hours after his fourth grandchild was born.
The body of Garret McKeon, the retired owner of a commercial moving company in Manhattan, was found in the woods off Route 202 about 1:15 p.m. Thursday after tree company employees working at a Boniello Drive residence spotted him, his family said.
At 10:31 a.m. Thursday, McKeon's newest granddaughter, Caitlin Theresa O'Connor, was born, weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces, at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco.
"I don't know what it means," McKeon's son and Caitlin's uncle, Eamon McKeon, 32, of White Plains said of the coincidence. "There's a lot of crazy emotions."
Also Thursday, Eamon McKeon's youngest son, Michael, turned 1 year old.
"As bad as it is to lose my father, we're glad we found him and got closure," he said. "We had a feeling today was going to be the day."
Garret McKeon, the father of five, lived on Mountain View Drive, a short distance from where he was found. He vanished Friday, setting off a search that included New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley and Connecticut, although his son said he always had a feeling his father was close.
McKeon was found near Somers Intermediate School. Family members said police believe McKeon may have wandered from Route 202 into the woods and fell where he was found.
No foul play is suspected. His cause of death is pending an autopsy.
After he wandered off, family, friends, state police and strangers responded to the McKeons' call for help, circulating his picture and description to thousands of people through social media while state troopers, firefighters and volunteers spent hours patiently chasing leads and searching.
"A huge thanks to everybody that helped," Eamon McKeon said. "It was really overwhelming."
The search, which included the woods where McKeon wasfound, had closed in on the area, making it likely that his body would have eventually been found Thursday, his son said.
"It's been one very long day," Eamon McKeon said.
