A family member has confirmed that Jesse Jones, an elderly man missing in D.C. since March 11, was found dead on Friday.
Jones' son Brian, who lives in New York, told ABC7 he received a call from police around 11 a.m. Friday informing him that his father's body had been found. Police confirm his body was found in the 2800 block of South Capitol Street SW, four miles from where he was last seen.
Jones, 83, reportedly walked away from The Residences at Thomas Circle in the 1000 block of 5th Street NW on March 11. He was last seen around 3 p.m. at Busboys & Poets at 5th and K streets NW.
Police and loved ones were concerned for Jones' welfare, saying he suffered from dementia and high blood pressure, and was in need of regular medication.
Jones was the former Chief Warden of the District of Columbia Jail and was one of the first African American officials in Mayor Walter Washington's D.C. Department of Corrections.
"He was a giant in his own way, a real rock in our family, and always connected with people and wanted the best in life and eh was a man of God," his son, Brian Jones, says.
Employees at The Residences at Thomas Circle had tied a ribbon for Jones in hopes he'd come home.
"My heart goes out fo the family and I just wish them well through these troublesome times," says Walter Bell.
