The body of a man found in the Meadow Lakes area last week has been identified as that of a Palmer snowmachiner missing since last year, Alaska State Troopers say.
In a Tuesday AST dispatch, troopers say the frozen remains found Thursday afternoon off Pittman Road are those of 33-year-old Corey Newell, who has been missing since Dec. 29.
"The cause and circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation," troopers wrote.
AST spokesperson Megan Peters says state medical examiners conducted an autopsy on Newell's body Tuesday, with word of his identity arriving late in the afternoon. No further details were immediately available about the investigation.
Friends and family say Newell's snowmachine was found in the Cloudy Lake area Dec. 31, after family members told troopers he had been traveling between houses and might not have reached his destination.
With the discovery of the Meadow Lakes body, those close to him have been bracing for the possibility that it might be Newell. While friends were still hoping earlier this week that the body wasn't Newell's,they believed rationally that it was indeed his.
Newell's next of kin have been notified.
