Jackson Police on Monday found a wallet and other items linked to three members of a Jackson-area family reported missing after a car crash.
WLBT reports police found the items in a Dumpster at a Shell gas station in south Jackson just before noon.
Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones told WJTV that a car crashed near the town of Carpenter off Shelby Road in the western part of the county on Saturday. Three people — 30-year-old Atira Hughes Smith, her 7-year-old son Jaidon Hill and her husband 34-year-old Laterry Smith — were reported missing.
The vehicle the family was traveling in also has been recovered, the sheriff's office said.
Police also searched the home of Laterry Smith's mother, which is not far from where the items were found. A neighbor says the mother and Smith's sisters moved out of the home Sunday night.
Atira Hughes Smith's family said deputies told them there had been an accident, just off Highway 18 but no one was inside the vehicle. The family said they last heard from her by phone on Friday. Hughes Smith told relatives that she was going out of town for a couple of days before the call ended suddenly.
Anyone with information about the accident or where the missing family might be is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 601-355-8477, the sheriff's office at 601-894-3011 or the FBI at 601-948-5000.
