About 30 people came on short notice to help with the search for Leamom Luffman, who has been missing since Monday.
“I came to help find a neighbor,” said Denise Rangel, who also lives on Bateman Branch Road, where Luffman and his wife Margie live.
Houston County Sheriff Darrell Allison thanked the group for their help and said it was typical of people in the community.
“We are a small department and don’t have a lot of resources,” he told the volunteers just before they divided up into groups of five. “You all being here means a lot to me, and I know it means the world to the family. ... This just show that this community cares for its citizens.”
The Sheriff’s Office started getting the word out just before 10 a.m. about the noon search.
Jennifer Taylor, who was a former volunteer firefighter, also came out help.
“I was on the Search and Rescue Team,” she said. “I’m not with the department anymore but it’s still part of my life.”
Clarksville resident John Hobaugh drove to Houston County after work to be among the searchers.
“I saw the story online, and they asked me if I wanted off work, so I thought I’d come on down.” said the Boy Scout leader for Troop 525.
Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Hooper briefed the volunteers before they were shuttled to an area behind the Luffman residence. The shoulder-to-shoulder search got under way around 1 p.m. and was to cover a wooded section of land.
“There is very thick brush in that area,” he said.
Hooper said search dogs had caught Luffman’s scent from his home on Tuesday and tracked along Bateman Branch for a distance before it was lost. He said Luffman had taken a walk along the road Sunday so the scent could have been from that instance.
“We just know a lot of the people out there searching,” said Brandy Kelly of Erin. “This is our community and we try to help when we can.”
Margie Luffman said her husband was not at their residence when she awoke just after 6 a.m. on Monday, but she assumed he had gone to work as usual and even found the coffee still hot in the coffeemaker. She later noticed his car was still parked outside.
Leamon Luffman, 65, is described as about 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, with gray hair and blue eyes
