Amber Alert issued by Galveston Co. Sheriff's Office canceled after kids found safe in Tennessee
Saturday, October 05, 2013
At this point, we don't have any details about how the children were discovered. The Amber Alert was issued after authorities said Donovan Mickens, 3, Deyon Mickens, 4, Donald Mickens, Jr., 6, and Donae Mickens, 9, were believed to be with their biological mother, Beverly Mickens. Investigators say Beverly Mickens left the state with the children in violation of a court order brought about by CPS.
CPS says Beverly Mickens, 34, notified them Friday that she was on her way back to Texas, but the agency was concerned she might be under the influence of a controlled substance. They also say she may have been suffering from pneumonia and possibly strep throat. They believe she may have been involved in a wreck and the children may need medical care.
The alert was canceled just before noon Saturday.
CPS officials said they were traveling to Tennessee to pick up the children and bring them back to Houston on Sunday.
According to CPS, the kids were previously living with their father. Mickens was reportedly allowed to see them and have access to them, but she was not allowed to be alone with them.
Because she was allowed to be alone with them against a court order, the children will be placed in a foster home once they return to Texas, authorities said.
