Cheryl Burns Returns Home

FISHERSVILLE, Va. (WHSV) -- Cheryl Burns, the missing teacher from Cub Run Elementary School has been found alive.

The initial news came down at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday after her family called the Augusta County Sheriff's Office at about 9 a.m. to report she had returned unharmed.

Sgt. David Lotts with the Augusta County Sheriff's Office said she was alone in this.

He also said her family was convinced before Tuesday that she was kidnapped, so this is certainly good news.

Deputies are still looking into where she went and what happened to her cell phone.

Before Burns returned home, it was a pretty cold trail for police deputies.

Augusta County led the investigation, but the Rockingham County Sheriff's office also assisted.

Deputies tried to retrace her path to work at Cub Run Elementary.

Like other missing people cases, they used several different ways to try to Burns.

"We also find out if there are any favorite places they like to go, or certain day-to-day habits they like to follow, or if they don't follow them, why they're not following them. Just follow up with family and friends and neighbors," said Lotts.

Lotts also said Burns will undergo a voluntary mental and physical evaluation at a hospital and will not be facing any criminal charges.
