Body Of 80-Year-Old Missing Man Found

MILLER, SD -
Hand County authorities say the 80-year-old Pierre man who had been missing since Sunday morning was found dead.
Authorities found LeRoy Nye in Jerauld County near a small pond, just west of Cottonwood Lake.
Nye had driven the green 2001 Dodge Intrepid into a pasture, but the vehicle got stuck in the mud. Authorities say Nye tried to push the car out of the mud, but couldn’t. They believe he then set out on foot and headed to the southeast.
Nye was found dead, lying on the ground by searchers with the Civil Air Patrol. It is not known at this time how long Nye had been there.
Nye, who suffered from dementia, left his son’s home in St. Lawrence, South Dakota some time in the early morning hours on Sunday.
Authorities searched beyond the Hand County border and even reached out to neighboring states and hospital networks in an effort to find Nye.
The Hand County sheriff says Nye’s family says they are grateful for the care and concerns shown by so many people whom they did not know.
Reck Funeral Home of Miller and Isburg Funeral Chapel of Pierre are working on final funeral preparations for Nye.
