Columbia High School teacher Benjamin Gilliland dies on I-75 |

The Florida Highway Patrol has identified a man who died on Interstate 75 Sunday in Marion County as Benjamin "Ben" Tod Gilliland, 27, a Columbia High School teacher. Trooper Rick Brown reported that Gilliland was struck by a tractor trailer that was traveling north on I-75 at approximately the 397 mile marker in the right outside lane. The victim was not carrying any identification and was not identified until Tuesday. He was struck at at 12:37 a.m. on Sunday, May 19. Meanwhile, Gilliland, who lived in Alachua, had been reported missing. Friends posted a missing-person report on Facebook. Gilliland was a graduate of the University of Florida and taught language arts at Columbia High School. The truck driver stopped and reported the collision. He is not being charged. |
