Located safe; Thomgsa Onemany 72 - Anchorage, Alaska

ANCHORAGE – Updated story
A 72-year-old man who became separated from a friend in Chugiak Thursday was found Friday morning after he walked for hours overnight to reach a relative's house in Anchorage.

Thomgsa Onemany had gotten separated from his friend while gathering mushrooms in the woods near the Old Redeemer Lutheran Church in Chugiak, located on the Old Glenn Highway. A search began that night and resumed Friday morning, said Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

Onemany walked to a family member's home on Hoyt Street, which is about 18 miles from the Chugiak church, said APD spokeswoman Dani Myren. Google Maps estimates it would take nearly six hours to walk the distance.

While walking to Anchorage, Myren said that Onemany, who is Laotian, tried to talk to citizens but was unable to communicate his needs because of a language barrier.

His family called police when Onemany was found and the search was called off around 10 a.m.

"All indications are that he is safe and sound," Myren said.
