HERCULANEUM, Mo. (KSDK) - A 60-year-old Pevely woman who disappeared last week was found dead Thursday near Herculaneum.
Deborah Rawlings was last seen on the afternoon of Saturday, August 17 walking south on Highway 61/67. She suffered from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and was without her medications.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said Rawlings' death did not appear suspicious.
The Alzheimer's Association said more than 60 percent of people with some form of dementia will wander off, and if a person is not found within 24 hours, up to half of those people will suffer serious injury or death.
Relatives and those who care for people with dementia should look for these signs of wandering behavior:
- Comes back from a regular walk or drive later than usual
- Tries to fulfill former obligations, such as going to work
- Tries or wants to "go home" even when at home
- Is restless, paces or makes repetitive movements
- Has a hard time locating familiar places like the bathroom, bedroom or dining room
- Acts as if performing a hobby or chore, but nothing gets done
- Acts nervous or anxious in crowded areas, such as shopping malls or restaurants
Thank you for your attention,
Allison Miller
