A 24-year-old Hastings woman missing since December, when she walked out of Regions Hospital against her doctor's advice, has been found safe in Oklahoma.

Police in Marlow, Okla., located Nikole Sherry on Saturday, March 9, after they were called to a convenience store to check on her well-being, Hastings police chief Paul Schnell said.

"Officers down there determined that she was OK," Schnell said. "But we had her listed as a missing vulnerable adult."

Sherry left no trace of her whereabouts since leaving Regions on Dec. 17, where she was receiving mental health services, Schnell said. She didn't have a car and was not using credit cards. She made no contact with family back in Hastings.

"We kept getting some pretty obscure tips," Schnell said.

On Saturday, after being located, a Hastings officer talked with her by phone and concluded there was no criminal activity that brought her to Oklahoma and "she was not a danger to herself or others," Schnell said.

Sherry apparently spent her time "drifting" by finding rides to travel, eventually landing in Marlow, where she has stayed with a man for the past month, Schnell said.

"I think things had unraveled a little bit with that person and she was asked to leave," Schnell said.

The man told police he did not know Sherry was a missing person, he said.

As to why she left Regions, "She just said she needed to get away, she wanted a break," Schnell said.

Sherry's family is making arrangements to bring her back to Minnesota.

"When you consider the range of options there could be in these types of situations, this certainly is a good outcome," Schnell said.
