Missing Plano man found safe

A 21-year old Plano man with cerebral palsy who had been reported missing from his home since Friday was found safe Sunday evening in Carbondale.
Corey Cann had been missing from his home and family and friends launched a search on Sunday as well as placed information about his disappearance on Facebook.

Plano Police on Sunday said Cann was with the two men who drove away with him on Friday. Sgt. Norm Allison of the Plano Police Department said they spoke with Corey at about 6:40 p.m. by telephone. “With the assistance of the Carbondale Police Department we were able to run a few leads and track down Corey,” Allison said.
“Corey indicated to us he left on his own accord, he is totally fine, happy and healthy. We are going to facilitate what he is going to do next, whether he wants to come home or stay down there,” Allison said.
Corey has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair. His family was fearful Corey had been forced to leave — they had no contact with him since he was taken from his home at about 6:50 p.m. Friday.
Allison said Carbondale officers separated Corey from the two men when he made statements to police that he was OK. “Corey was with the individuals he left with freely at their place of residence in Carbondale. We no longer consider Corey missing. It was a lack of communication — Corey never made a statement where he was going,” Allison said.
The incident began Friday when two men supposedly friends from college came and left with him in his wheelchair.
Family members said Corey graduated from Plano High School in 2010 and is confined to a power wheel chair. The young man left the house with two people described in their late teens or early 20s.
A group organized an effort Sunday afternoon to search for Cann beginning at the Yorkville Community Christian Church.
Friends of the family said about 45 people concerned and wanting to help gathered Sunday to search for him in Silver Springs State Park and other local parks.
They were optimistic that Cann would be found safe. “The only positive news we could hear is if we found Corey. The police are working hard to turn over every stone,” said Beth Kolar, who helped organize the search effort and was updating a Facebook page earlier Sunday.
Ed Cann said his brother had no winter coat, shoes or socks on. Cann said his brother suffers from a condition that requires him to wear tight-fitting socks and elevate his legs to aid a circulation condition.
Ed Cann was the last to see his brother at around 6:50 p.m. Friday night. Cann said that Corey had asked him late in the afternoon if two friends from Southern Illinois University could come over to the house.
Cann said one of the men came to the house and said, ‘We just took Corey out for a spin in the truck.’ He walked past me back into my house when I asked what was going on. He walked to get his coat in the kitchen and before he left he walked up to the door to let the dog out of the bedroom.”
“It all happened in around seven minutes,” Cann said. Cann said he tried for several minutes to reach his brother on his cell phone but it kept going to voice mail.
“Even if this was a weekend joy ride getaway thing, it is so unlike Corey,” the brother said. “If Corey goes somewhere, to church or the movies, he is either with one of us or we escort him to the destination and return to bring him home.”
Cann said Corey attended SIU for about a year before his health began to decline. Cann said a woman reported to police Sunday morning that she saw Corey on the back of a tan pick-up truck in his power chair. “Corey is a very caring, loving person and super trusting. If he feels someone is in need, he will give without question, whether he knows them or not. His character is to help, assist and trust people,” Cann said.
