ABINGDON, Va. — The body of a missing man was found Wednesday, buried in several inches of snow along a busy Abingdon thoroughfare.
On Wednesday afternoon, Abingdon Police Department officers were sent to the 300 block of Cummings Street in the downtown area to investigate a report of a shoe partially sticking out of the snow there.
Upon arrival, the officers found the body of Forrest Campbell, 53, who was reported as a missing person last week.
"It was apparent that Campbell was buried under several inches of snow and the exposed shoe was a result of the melting snow," police spokeswoman Tenille Montgomery said.
Investigators said they processed the scene for evidence, but found no indications that Campbell's death was a result of foul play. His body has been taken to the state medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy.
Last Thursday, police asked for the public's help to find Campbell. Police said Campbell was last seen leaving the Renaissance House on Bradley Street on the afternoon of Feb. 17 to go to a Kroger supermarket in the 400 block of Cummings Street.
The Renaissance House, which is an assisted-living facility, alerted police on the night of his disappearance. Police checked places Campbell usually visits to no avail.
Multiple snowstorms have swept through the region since last week, and several inches of snow remained on the ground Wednesday. Record-breaking frigid temperatures have also been recorded since he was reported missing, including a low of minus 13 on Feb. 20.
