John Johnson's search for his missing son, Jeremy, is now in its fifth week.
"I've been places I never thought I would be," the elder Johnson said in recounting his efforts to find his 23-year-old son, most recently seen at a family member's rural Gaston home on Oct. 14.
Johnson acknowledges his son has battled personal problems — specifically, an addiction to heroin.
There has also been trouble with the law, the most serious of which resulted in a burglary conviction in 2010. Last January, the younger Johnson pleaded guilty to charges resulting from a September 2012 incident that saw him crash his pickup truck, while intoxicated, into a Muncie hair salon.
There are a pair of pending Muncie City Court cases, both the result of invasion-of-privacy allegations stemming from September incidents involving an ex-girlfriend.
But those misdemeanor cases — with initial hearings yet to be held — seem unlikely to compel someone to flee the area.
"He's not on the run," Johnson said this week. "I don't believe that. ... He'd be calling me trying to get money. I don't know how he'd get by."
Johnson fears his son's absence might be the result of his substance abuse — and his dealings with others involved in drugs.
The father has distributed more than 150 fliers with his son's photo, asking anyone with information about Jeremy's whereabouts to come forward.
That effort has produced a few tips, but nothing resulting in a resolution of the mystery.
Kurt Walthour, an investigator with the Delaware County Sheriff's Department, is looking for the younger Johnson.
Not long before he went missing, Walthour said, Jeremy Johnson traded his mini-van for a white, 1999 Camaro with a T-top.
"He was really into the drug world," Walthour said Friday. "He owed a lot of people money."
The detective asked that anyone with information on Johnson to contact him through the sheriff's department, at (765) 747-7881.
