Authorities have confirmed the identity of a body found in an Iowa home over the weekend as that of a Washington man reported missing last week.
Police found the body of Christopher Freeman, 56, on Sunday afternoon in an abandoned house in the 1200 block of Main Street in Fairfield, Iowa, after he had been reported missing Aug. 27 by family in central Illinois.
An autopsy showed Freeman died of undetermined natural causes, with no evidence of foul play, homicide or suicide, according to a release from the Fairfield Police Department.
Additional tests are being undertaken by the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office to specify the cause of death. Family had told police in Illinois that Freeman had a potentially fatal medical condition and had left his medication at home. He was last seen driving a gray Toyota Tacoma near Elmwood.
Officers in Fairfield located the vehicle at 1:38 p.m. Sunday parked near 1200 S. Main St., Freeman's childhood home. Believing Freeman may have been armed, tactical officers responded, shut down a portion of the street and attempted to make contact with Freeman inside the house.
When no one responded, police entered the home and found Freeman's body on the third floor. A legal firearm was found in a case in Freeman's vehicle. No weapons were found with the body.
"It is unknown what his intentions were, but it appears he meant no harm to any person," Fairfield police Capt. David Thomas said.
