PINE CITY, Minn. - A Pine County man accused of skipping a custody hearing and taking his two children without permission has been arrested in Kansas.
Sheriff Robin Cole confirmed for KARE 11's Jay Olstad that 44-year old Peter John Kunze was pulled over in Kansas just after midnight Wednesday morning for having a headlight out. Once law enforcement ran his information they realized Kunze was wanted in Minnesota and placed him under arrest. Kunze's two children, 16-year-old daughter Sean Hanson and 12-year-old Joshua Kunze, were in the vehicle with him, as were two of Kunze's adult children.
The sheriff says the two younger children had no idea that people were looking for them, believing they were on vacation. Authorities say it appears Kunze was headed to Oklahoma.
Cole says the Department of Human Services is moving quickly to get the children back to Minnesota so they can be reunited with their mother. Prosecutors will begin the extradition process to get Kunze back to Pine County where he will face charges of deprivation of custodial rights.
