The family of a missing 80-year-old West Melbourne man who suffers from Alzheimer's disease is asking local residents to spread the word as they continue to look for leads in his disappearance.
Robert Harrison is a 5'11" white male who weighs 145 pounds, with gray hair and hazel eyes. He was last seen at 9 p.m. Sunday near Milwaukee Avenue in West Melbourne. He was wearing blue jeans and a white t-shirt with a green and white "Western" style shirt on over it.
"We're going door-to-door handing out fliers, and you know just trying to make sure people were aware. Just in the general vicinity of his home, it's amazing how many people were unaware that it was going on or thought that he'd been found," said Heather Lathero, Harrison's granddaughter.
There have been no leads in the search thus far, despite the efforts of local authorities.
"The Sheriff's Department has pretty much exhausted their dog resources," said Lathero. "They've flown a helicopter pretty much everywhere they can think to fly it. They've started scaling back quite a bit to just having a certain amount of officers on the ground."
Lathero says she and other family members have handed out fliers and gone door-to-door in West Melbourne, between Minton Road and I-95. They are now also looking to outside help to aid in their search.
"We made contact last night with Texas Equusearch and they arrived this morning and they are now starting to coordinate, bring their teams in, see what they can do," said Lathero. "They've asked to not search the ground as of right now. They will probably ask for volunteers once they've done their initial findings and then go from there. Possibly Sunday they may ask for volunteers to come through."
They're also asking people beyond West Melbourne to share information about Harrison.
"He's lived in several places in the country," added Lathero. "We can't do a silver alert because he was on foot and not in a car, so we can't run it that way. Even if you live in Alabama or Georgia, go ahead and share the link because you never know where he might turn up."
The family also asks those who do live in the area to check their properties, wooded areas, ponds and sheds.
They also ask that anyone with any information contact the Brevard County Sherriff's Office at 321-264-5100, or Agent David Bowes at 321-544-4275.
