The five-week search for a missing 93-year-old San Rafael man might have reached its end Tuesday with the discovery of his wrecked car and a body near it.
Marin County coroner's investigators were working to confirm that the victim is Robert Leslie Davis, who was last seen Feb. 26 in Corte Madera. Police said he never made it home after driving away from Marin Joe's restaurant in his gray 2001 Toyota Camry.
On Tuesday morning, an employee with the California Department of Transportation reported finding the car off Shoreline Highway just north of Dogtown, said Officer Andrew Barclay of the California Highway Patrol. The employee took the registration from the car and went to the CHP office in Corte Madera.
The car was about 125 feet off the road and down an embankment amid dense trees and vegetation. The Marin County Search and Rescue team was called to search the area around the car for the driver.
The death investigation was turned over to the coroner's division.
The protracted effort to find Davis had prompted supporters to establish a website athttp://www.robertdavismissingperson.com and offer a $5,000 reward.
According to the website, Davis was born and raised in Philadelphia and served as a pilot in World War II. He and his family eventually moved to California and he flew as a reservist at Hamilton Field in Novato.
Davis moved to Villa Marin after the death of his wife in 2000.
