Authorities are asking for the public's help in finding a missing elderly woman.
Officials in Pointe Coupee Parish said Isla Lazare, 66, left Lakeview Manor nursing home Thursday night. They added she has a history of dementia.
"The video film from the security camera shows that she walked out after she had finished her cigarette and seemed to be walking with a purpose like she was going somewhere," said her husband Jim Lazare.
The nursing home staff said surveillance video showed her walking out the doors at 9:55 p.m. wearing the same pink shirt seen in the picture. Security cameras showed a determined May May leaving Lakeview Manor. Jim says he's worried because the nursing home is the only place his wife knows.
"She doesn't know this area. She's been in the home here since we moved here after Katrina and she doesn't know her way around town. Her memory doesn't work shorterm," said Jim.
According to reports, she answers to "May May." Investigators reported her daughter said she is a heavy smoker and might be asking for cigarettes.
The sheriff's office sent up a helicopter Friday afternoon to help search the city. On the ground, men in uniform and volunteers were busy passing out fliers and talking to everyone they bumped into.
"We've employed all of our detectives to go out and canvass the area and talk to businesses to see if we can't come up with a lead that would aid us in finding Ms. Lazare," said Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff Bud Torres.
While her husband and daughter, Victoria, are optimistic they say they are also concerned May May may have hitched a ride to Metairie, Louisiana; the last place she remembers living before she moved to New Roads in 2007.
