Two-thousand fliers are the start to achieving at least three goals for a group gathered at UNO Monday; first, spread the word about missing 19-year-old Hayley Howard. The second is to track down the last people to see her and, lastly, find Hayley safe.
"We've separated the city into about eight different segments and we've been dispatching people to put fliers up in different segments," said friend Elizabeth Gelvin.
Howard's family says when she left her Slidell home Friday morning, the Dean's List student, who was recently accepted into pharmacy school, was headed to classes at UNO and then to work Uptown.
"She was supposed to come to Slidell after she got off of work and meet up with us, but she ended up going with some co-workers and here we are," said friend Daniel Lemonier.
Howard was last seen at a dorm on campus dropping off a friend following drinks at a Magazine Street bar.
NOPD has been able to track Hayley's cell phone back to two locations, one of them in the UNO area around Leon C Simon. That's also the last place she was heard from when she called her boyfriend around 2 a.m.
He said she had gotten a flat tire and a group of people helped her fix it, and then she was on her way home. The last time NOPD tracked her cell phone was along Irish Bayou around 6 a.m.
"If you helped anybody on that day change a tire in any area around here, please, please call the authorities," said Howard's mother, Cindy. "We would appreciate it. We're wanting to find our daughter safe and sound."
St. Tammany deputies have also joined the search.
"We have investigators working in New Orleans right now," Strain said. "They're actually walking areas to see if there's any signs of a vehicle entering the water, interviewing people who may have seen Hayley around UNO, pulling video, private sector video on both sides of the lake."
Strain said his office has searched the Irish Bayou area with helicopters and boats, but hope to use sonar equipment in the lake when water conditions calm.
Loved ones are hopeful.
"We just have to have faith in God that all of this will work out," said father Jim Howard. "Try to hold our heads up and search and hope that we find something."
Howard's car is a 2002 silver Toyota Corolla with the Louisiana License Plate XBP 643. If you have any information about her whereabouts between early Saturday morning and now, call the New Orleans Police Department or the St. Tammany Sheriff's Office.
