Authorities found the body of a 66-year-old woman on Sunday afternoon in False River after she disappeared Thursday night from a New Roads nursing home, according to the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office.
Authorities responded to the oxbow lake near Lakeview Manor nursing home shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday after a 911 caller reported finding what looked like a body floating in False River, Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff Bud Torres said.
A Pointe Coupee Fire District 5 rescue specialist waded out into the water and retrieved the body authorities identified as Isla Lazare, 66, pending an autopsy, Torres said.
"We were hoping she would still be alive," Torres said.
Lazare, who had a history of dementia and sometimes wandered off, disappeared Thursday night while taking a smoke break at the nursing home where she was staying, which was just a few hundred yards away from where her body turned up near the lake's bank, Torres said.
Following her disappearance, authorities combed the area looking for her, which included a complete aerial sweep of the area, Torres said.
Investigators do not believe an act of violence led to Lazare's death, Torres said, adding she was found wearing all her clothes and even some jewelry.
"It's just a sad deal," he said.
It wasn't immediately clear how Lazare ended up in the lake.
New Roads police investigated the disappearance with assistance from the Sheriff's Office.
