The family of a Pinson woman missing since Friday evening says they have found her body, and the Jefferson County Coroner's Office has confirmed the identity.
Lula Hazzard Skanes, 66, was missing from her home on Oak Creek Trail just outside the Pinson city limits when her daughter checked the house at about 8:30 p.m. Skanes suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
A search was conducted, and this morning a body matching the woman's description was found in a wooded area off Sweeney Hollow Road by Skanes' son.
Family members told the media Tuesday morning that the body was that of Skanes. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office officially confirmed the deceased as Skanes on Tuesday afternoon. An official cause of death will not be determined until Wednesday.
A spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said there were no obvious signs of foul play, but a final determination could not be made until a report comes from the coroner.
