ST. LOUIS • A body found Monday morning near railroad tracks in St. Louis has been identified as a man reported missing in Collinsville in December, police say.

A dog walker found remains of Joseph Hartsoe II, 22, of the 1600 block of California Avenue, along railroad tracks in the 3000 block of North Wharf Street. The area is near the Mississippi River and the St. Louis Riverfront Trail, south of the McKinley Bridge.

St. Louis police called Hartsoe's death a homicide but have not said how they think he died. Authorities said evidence found with Hartsoe's skeletal remains suggested his death was the result of a crime, but police would not disclose details. An autopsy is pending.

When Hartsoe disappeared last year, Collinsville police said he had a history of drug abuse. He was last seen at a relative's house on Nov. 25.

A cousin, Tanya Rivoire, 30, said Hartsoe was energetic, full of life, who always cracked a smile and would love playing in the backyard with his younger relatives. “He was loved by so many,” she said. “You wouldn't believe the amount of people who showed up to his parent's house, people we didn't even know,” she said.

Hartsoe worked as a roofer at her company, TND Construction, and had a large extended family, mostly in Collinsville. Visitation for Hartsoe will be held Saturday at Herr Funeral Home in Collinsville from 1 to 3 p.m. with a funeral service at 3 p.m.
