Police safely recovered a missing 2-year-old Gresham girl, Paige Cavett, tonight and arrested the girl's father, who is accused of abducting the girl after shooting the child's mother.

Joshua R. Cavett was taken into custody without incident after a tip came in based on an Amber Alert. Neighbors say Paige lived in the apartment with her mother, who is Cavett’s estranged wife, Jessie Doyle Cavett, 27. Police said Doyle Cavett remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Authorities did not disclose the nature of Doyle Cavett's injuries or say where she was being treated. Police transported her daughter to an unnamed hospital as a precautionary measure. They said Paige showed no signs of injury.

Earlier, police issued an Amber Alert when Cavett and his daughter vanished and a search began across the metro area. Cavett has a violent history. He has tattoos across his face, and authorities described him as “anti-police.”

Police said they arrested Cavett at an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Southwest Pleasant View Drive.

"Someone recognized him from the Amber Alert and called us," said Lt. Caludio Grandjean of the Gresham Police Department. Police received the call about 8:50 p.m., he said, and were on the scene a little more than 10 minutes later. They found Cavett on the grounds of the apartment complex.

"He was compliant," Grandjean said.

Suspect Joshua Cavett in custody. Paige Cavett is safe. More info as it comes available. Thnx all who helped get word out.

Police responded to a report of the shooting at 11:38 a.m. Saturday at the Holly Ridge apartments, located in the 2700 block of West Powell Boulevard in Gresham. The victim, suffering life-threatening wounds, was transported to an unnamed hospital.

Maria Sypher said she was outside her home at Holly Ridge a little after 10:15 Saturday morning, smoking a cigarette when she saw a man in a large black jacket, dark pants with apparent tattoos on his neck standing and yelling at someone at an apartment unit across from her. His back was to her and she couldn't make out what he was saying or whom it was directed towards.

"I didn't know what was going on and he seemed very upset," Sypher said. "But it wasn't any of my business, so I went back inside."

Sypher said she went outside again sometime later after hearing a commotion and soon saw a web of red and yellow police tape.

"I feel guilty," Sypher said. "If I stayed a little longer maybe I would have saw something that would have made me call police. But I didn't know."

Public records show the couple filed for divorce in August. Doyle Cavett has legal custody of Paige.

Public records indicate Cavett has a felony assault conviction from 2007. Three different women have taken out restraining orders against him since 2009.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misidentified the location where police found Cavett.
