Body Found in Portsmouth Confirmed as Missing UNH Student

Jonathan Zygmont went missing earlier this month.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Monday that a body found in the Piscataqua River Sunday morning is Jonathan Zygmont, a University of New Hampshire student who went missing earlier this month.

The body was recovered near Prescott Park—where police said Zygmont was last seen Sept. 17.

Zymont, 19, of Windham, was a first-year student at UNH. When he was first reported missing, police said they did not suspect foul play. They said Zygmont may have been having relationship difficulties and was "despondent."

His mother said her son was an avid hiker and hoped he was somewhere on a trail.

“UNH is a caring community and it is always difficult to learn of the death of one of our students,” said UNH President Mark Huddleston in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this very difficult time and will remain focused on providing support and resources to our campus community and Jon’s loved ones.”
