AT-RISK MISSING MAN: George Vanderweit, 70 - Rochester, MICHIGAN (DESPONDENT)
Rochester police are still searching for George Vanderweit, a resident reported missing earlier this month after being discharged from a mental health facility.
Vanderweit, 70, was last seen at 9:20 a.m. July 5 around the intersection of Runyon and Dequindre roads.
Rochester Police Chief Steven Schettenhelm said Vanderweit was having issues with depression and was discharged from the hospital on July 4.
“We’ve done a number of large-scale searches,” Schettenhelm said, “and have had smaller searches nearly every day since then.”
About 60 people searched a 5-square-mile area on July 6, he said. The police department has received assistance from a number of K9 units and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department.
At the time he was last seen, Vanderweit was wearing a red shirt with the word “bargains” on it and olive green shorts. He was riding an “older-style” green 10-speed bicycle, Schettenhelm said.
Police officials have been in touch with Vanderweit’s wife and children every day, he added.
Vanderweit left the home he shares with his wife without a cell phone, wallet or identification, and is considered to be a danger to himself.
Schettenhelm said three medications were missing from Vanderweit’s home and appeared to be the only thing he took with him.
Anyone with information about Vanderweit’s whereabouts is asked to call the Rochester Police Department at 248-651-9621.
