Missing 91-year-old from Modesto found dead in Tuolumne County

-- The body of a 91-year-old man reported missing from Modesto last week has been found in Tuolumne County, authorities said.

Someone cutting in the forest Monday morning outside of Long Barn found the body later identified as Amos McElvaine, the Tuolumne County Sheriff's office reported.

Investigators do not know why McElvaine was in the area, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. Nothing seemed to be missing and there was no sign of criminal activity, authorities said.

McElvaine's family has been notified; cause of death is pending completion of an autopsy.

Sgt. Jim Oliver said McElvaine’s car was located on a United States Forest Service road in the area, roughly 100 yards from his body. It did not appear that McElvaine ran out of gas. It wasn’t clear whether McElvaine had a cell phone.

Family members said McElvaine didn't know anyone in the area and they are trying to determine why he drove there.

We'll have an update on this story with more details and reaction from family and friends later today.
