CALDWELL COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -
The search for a missing woman has now turned into a death investigation. Human remains found in Caldwell County are that of Carol J. Thompson. She disappeared from the Lathrop, MO, area last June.
Her family had never given up hope that she would be found alive, so the news was very upsetting. But it was also a piece of certainty after so much waiting and wondering.
It's a small relief after 10 months of searching, waiting and wondering. It took less than a week for dental records to confirm the fears raised by the recent discovery of remains.
Thompson's sister was still absorbing the finality of it Thursday night and was not ready to speak on camera, but months ago, on the day Thompson would have turned 51, she shared her hopes with KCTV5 News.
"Something happened June 15 that none of us know, and we're hoping that somebody will have an answer," Judy Courtney said.
Thompson was last seen in the early morning hours of June 15 at the home she shared with her boyfriend, about eight miles east of Lathrop. She had not been seen or heard from since. She left behind her car, her keys, her purse and her medication.
Now, her family has one answer.
Thompson's remains were found Sunday just a mile and a half from the rural home she shared with her boyfriend. They were found by someone walking a dog in the area not far from Lathrop.
What her family still doesn't know is how and why.
The sheriff said the remains are being sent to a lab in Texas for forensic tests, but it could be three months before results return.
Her boyfriend, Dwight Adkison, gave KCTV5 this written statement.
"It's been a difficult 10 months, and at times it felt we may never have closure. This week, closure became a possibility. Thank you to everyone who kept her story alive and helped to bring her home to her friends and loved ones. There are still difficult months ahead, but now we can begin to heal and remember Carol."
Thompson's sister hired a private investigator to assist with locating her sister. As it turns out, the remains were discovered not by any search, but by coincidence. Still, she said the PI has been a "godsend" to her and she plans to speak with KCTV5 about it in the next few days.
