Update 10/13:
The body of 79-year-old Laurence H. Nichol, a Monongalia County man with Alzheimer's who had been missing for about four days, has been found.
Searchers discovered his body around 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening, in a wooded area near Sun Valley Townhomes in the Cheat Lake area of Monongalia County.
Nichol had been reported missing by his family Tuesday evening. A massive air and ground search was conducted over the past several days by numerous volunteers and several search and rescue teams.
Nichol's body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office.
The Monongalia County Sheriff's Department and the Office of Emergency Management would like to thank all of the citizens and agencies who volunteered to assist in the search.
Original Story 10/12:
Search teams leading the effort to find an elderly Monongalia County man with Alzheimer's are still clinging to the hope that he's still alive.
79-year-old Laurence Nichol went for a walk Tuesday along Turtle Creek Drive, and hasn't been seen since. More than 100 volunteers have joined the search for him, but Friday's search was left up to the professionals. They concentrated their search on a 1.2 mile radius where Nichol was last seen.
Officials said they went door to door asking folks if they had seen him. Tracking dogs were also brought in to see if they could pick up on Nichol's scent. Apparently they found a few credible leads, but they were not able to find him.
During a press conference Friday afternoon officials said the search for the 79-year-old is entering into a critical point, but they believe he's still alive. Sheriff Al Kisner, of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department, mentioned the family is holding up well under the circumstances. "At this point they know everything that we know," Kisner said. "Under the circumstances we feel that they are doing pretty well. We just hope that we have a positive outcome."
Nichol is described as 5'10", 145 pounds with a goatee and salt and pepper colored hair. He was last seen wearing a red jacket, white pants and brown shoes.
Officials have been asking folks in the area to double check any sheds or garages, because with Nichol's condition he has the ability to realize he's cold and might have gone to seek shelter.
Mike Wolfe, the Interim Director of Mecca 911, said they're asking for volunteers to join the search for Nichol on Saturday.
Those interested in joining the search should register at Cheat Lake Elementary, which is located at 154 Crosby Road, Morgantown, at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. They can also call (304) 806-3050.
