Located safe: Philip Caruso 22 - Staten Island, New York

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Philip Caruso, 22, will undergo surgery Friday morning to treat the head injury he received after he was apparently punched and fell, striking his head, over the weekend, his mother said.

Caruso, who surprised his family when he walked through the door of their home on Dubois Avenue in West Brighton, was the subject of a three-day search by the city Police Department, family and friends. He is currently being treated at Richmond University Medical Center.

"It's a miracle he's alive," Helen Caracappa said from her son's hospital room Thursday evening.

Doctors told Ms. Caracappa her son had suffered severe head trauma, including a fractured skull and bleeding.

"The doctors said he shouldn't even be here," Ms. Caracappa said. "The grace of God brought him home -- he would have slipped into a coma by tomorrow," she added.

Family members were still trying to piece together Caruso's whereabouts over the past 72 hours.

"He can answer the doctor's questions, but he's still not too sure where he is," said Ms. Caracappa, noting that her son also recognized his young daughter and other family members at the hospital.
