The search parties are smaller than they were and searches are sporadic. But three months after he disappeared, people still hike into the Waianae mountain range looking for Richard Kalani Vierra.
"I'm glad there are people who are willing to still to go up on the mountain to look for him," Dolly Vierra said.
She has had many sleepless nights in the 90 days since her son vanished.
"He's my flesh and blood. He's the only child I have,' she said.
Johanne Mitchell, Kalani's Jiu Jitsu coach, is baffled by the boy's disappearance. He was always in the dojo. If he isn't dead and he ran away, then why did he suddenly disconnect from family and friends?
"He was here five, six hours a day. He would train twice a day. Sometimes three times a day. It's confusing to us," Mitchell said.
On July 5, the 15-year-old hiked a ridge line near his home. His mom had one cell phone conversation with him when he said he was on his way down. That was her last contact with Kalani.
"We've searched the mountain over and over and there ain't no sign of him anywhere," she said.
There have been anonymous calls with Kalani sightings that don't pan out.
"Quit the rumors. Know that he's still missing and lets continue to search. And police please help us," Mitchell said. "I hope he didn't end up on that mountain. That's our hope. That he did run away, so he's safe somewhere."
Dolly Vierra said her son wanted to join the Marines when he finished high school. She said he was a good student with lots going for him. She has left his room exactly as he left it.
"I'm hoping one day that he will call and tell me, 'Mom, I'm here. Can I come home?' Come home, son," she said.
