Ernie Van Buskirk is facing one of the most gut wrenching experiences a parent can face. His son is missing.

Ken Van Buskirk, 54, was last seen on the evening of July 28th, 2014. Kenny, as he is known to friends and family, is approximately five foot nine and has a lean build, 160 to 170 pounds, he has gray hair that is thinning on top and hazel eyes. Ken is well known for wearing baseball caps backward. He also has a red rose tattoo on his upper right arm. He has dentures, but rarely wears them. He may be using a walking cane. Kenny suffers from lung cancer and has a very raspy voice. His father denotes that Ken looks and walks as if he is much older than his years.

The Lusk Police Department, Niobrara County Sheriff's Department and the Niobrara County Search and Rescue did a wide-scale, three-day sweep of the area as well as bringing in a canine unit from Cody, Wyo., two canine units from Cheyenne, Wyo. and horseback searchers from Nebraska this past weekend. "There was very little information to go on", states Niobrara County Sheriff Rick Zerbe. Van Buskirk's family members feel that due to the fact that he disappeared on the 28th of the month and his disability check was not due for another four days that he did not deliberately leave on his own accord.

Ernie VanBuskirk, of Thermopolis tells of his son's deep love and caring for the "senior folks and young kids"…noting that his son "would drop everything that he was doing to some old person". He goes on to say that his son, on more than one occasion, would give his literal last dollar to someone that he thought needed it more.

Ernie has had his hopes dashed with two false sightings of his son, one at a Dairy Queen in Gillette and one in his home base of Thermopolis. Kenny VanBuskirk came to Lusk to help his sister Diana Lutz, with her recovery and rehabilitation after she suffered a massive heart attack.

Kenny's cousin Sandy Sturdivant Olson of Guernsey, Wyo. shared in her own words her favorite story about Kenny as a child…

"Kenny was a bit of a mischievous child, a little on the ornery side. I remember one incident in Sunrise, WY, when Kenny had done something Grandpa Sturdivant was upset about. Grandpa was on the ornery side, too, so Grandpa caught a couple of big fuzzy bumble bees in an empty snoose container. For at least a full day, maybe longer, Grandpa kept Kenny in line by threatening him with those bees. Gramps later let the bees go and nobody was hurt, but Kenny was one well behaved kid for awhile."

In addition to his father Ernie VanBuskirk of Thermopolis, Kenny has two brothers, Dean VanBuskirk of Torrington and Mike Fronapfel of Hartville, a cousin, Sandy Sturdivant Olson of Guernsey, Wyo. and a son, believed to be living in South Carolina.

"As of this point Mr Van Buskirk is still missing and we do not know of his where abouts", said Sheriff Zerbe.

Lusk Police Chief Sean Dreesen would like to extend a special thank you to the Niobrara County Search and Rescue and the Niobrara County Sheriff's Office for all of their hard work and effort I this matter.
