Updated at 8:30 p.m.

With the identification of human remains found a week ago in Lawrence County, a 14-year-old mystery at last has been solved.

Lawrence County authorities on Thursday said that the remains are those of a retired dentist, Dr. David F. Johnson, of Buffalo, Wyo.

Lawrence County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Paul A. Hansen said Johnson's remains were discovered on Oct. 16 "by two gentlemen who were out marking trees" north of Wharf Mine. Foul play is not suspected in Johnson's death.

A forensic dental examination determined the remains were Johnson's. He was 70 and suffering from Alzheimer's disease when he was reported missing on June 5, 2000.

His disappearance prompted a search spanning South Dakota, Wyoming and Minnesota.
