A 15-year-old autistic teenager who went missing over a week ago was picked up by New York City police after he allegedly tried to steal an item from a Target store on Monday night, Mount Vernon police said.
Police in Harlem turned Jonathan Bryant over to Mount Vernon authorities after learning he had been reported missing, Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Burke said.
The 15-year-old Mount Vernon resident appears to be in "good health" and was taken to a juvenile facility in Westchester County after his mother got a person in need of supervision (PINS) warrant, police said.
Bryant, who has Asperger's Syndrome and is considered highly functional, told police he had stayed in parks at night and panhandled for money and food. The teenager was reported missing Aug. 8 when his mother returned from work and realized he was not home.
"Our detective kept in touch with the mom throughout this entire process," Burke told The Journal News on Tuesday.
No criminal charges have been filed related to Bryant's disappearance, and child protective services is involved, officials said.
