MISSING: Adolph Koutny, 83 - Cornell, WISCONSIN

(Adolph is approx. 63 in photo)

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for Adolph Koutny, 83, who is believed to have left his residence on foot more than a week ago.

On both Thursday and Friday of last week 20 searchers each day from the Cornell Fire Department, Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office and three different private dog handlers searched an area of 160 to 180 acres in the town of Arthur in the immediate area of Koutny’s residence.

The canine search produced very little trace of Koutny, the ground search was assisted by an aircraft from the Wisconsin State Patrol to check open areas and cropland. The wooded areas were searched after the landowner and friends of Koutny indicated they were where he would go to pick berries and mushrooms.

All indications remain that Koutny is in the immediate area as he has no vehicle and depends on friends and neighbors in the area to get around. Koutny may have been missing since Saturday Aug. 24 from mail and other items located at the residence.

The Sheriff’s Office was first notified on Thursday afternoon when there was a request by neighbors to check on his welfare as they had not heard from him for several days.

The scaled back search operations consist of working with adjacent land owners and accessing areas extending beyond the 160 – 180 acres. The initial search operations encountered heavy underbrush and difficult terrain due to excessive vegetation. As the foliage decreases better access in the next few weeks should help in the search efforts.

No foul play is suspected in the matter.
