Tentative ID: Earthly Body Located: Michael Gokey, 21, Pittsfield, MA
PITTSFIELD — Police believe a body found in a wooded area off Vin Hebert Boulevard is that of a missing 21-year-old Pittsfield man, Michael Gokey, but have not yet officially confirmed the body's identity, according to a statement issued by Berkshire District Attorney David F. Capeless.
State police troopers with a cadaver dog found the body at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the woods near Pittsfield Cemetery. Authorities do not suspect foul play.
The body was discovered while police were searching in and around that area for Gokey, who had been reported missing last week after he left his home on Tuesday and did not return.
Gokey had been known to hike the trails behind Lake Onota Village and the trails through nearby St. Joseph Cemetery.
Police described the body of that of a white man and approximately 20 to 30 years old.
“Based on evidence at the scene, and information gained during their investigation, investigators believed the body is that of the man they have searched for,” the statement read.
An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and a positive identification is expected to be made within the next several days.
