A body discovered by a fisherman early Wednesday morning has been identified by family as that of Austin Hudson-Lapore, 20, a third-year University of Chicago biochemistry student.

Hudson-Lapore disappeared the evening of June 12, a week before his body was found near the 3900 block of South Lake Shore Drive.

Hudson-Lapore had taken his last final exam of the school year earlier in the day, later returning to his apartment, and at one point logging into the university’s computer system and checking baseball scores, family said at a news conference on Friday. Although roommates did not see him leave, Hudson-Lapore’s family said they were able to conclude, based on his computer use, that he likely left his apartment in the 5300 block of South Kimbark Avenue between 8:30 and 10 p.m.

In a tearful press conference Friday evening outside the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel on the University of Chicago campus, Hudson-Lapore’s father, mother and sister asked for the community’s help in finding their loved one.

Gregg LaPore, Hudson-Lapore’s father, said his son was fascinated by weather and speculated the reason he might have dashed out of his apartment with nothing but his keys might have been to watch the storms that rolled into the city that night.

What actually happened that night is still under investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

The man who had gone to the lake to fish Wednesday morning, Eddie Hudson, 65, had only cast one line when he looked to his right and noticed the body in the water.

“I saw a body, which I thought was a log,” the fisherman said. “And I walked a little bit closer, then I thought it was a dummy. . .I discovered it wasn't a dummy and then I called 911 and they sent the Fire Department, police out.”

About 10 minutes later, he said, police arrived.

Hudson-Lapore’s body was lifted out of the water and taken to the medical examiner’s office Wednesday morning. Family identified the body as Hudson-Lapore several hours later, authorities said.

Among those at the scene was Hudson-Lapore's father. The family declined to talk to reporters on Wednesday. A press conference is scheduled for Thursday morning.

Karen Warren Coleman, vice president of Campus Life and Student Services at the university, released a statement Wednesday afternoon.

“Austin was a bright, promising student who was active on campus, had a great love for the outdoors, and was very engaged in the Shorey House community,” Warren Coleman wrote. “The University community sends our deepest sympathy and condolences to Austin’s family and his friends here at the University and across the country.”

Hudson-Lapore’s immediate family, who live in Albuquerque, said he was a happy person who talked with them on Skype for hours at a time. He had planned to work at a lab on campus, his father said at the press conference, so he could spend his last summer of college near his friends.

LaPore said that there was no reason to believe his son was distraught: “He’s a smart, happy and outgoing young man who was fully engaged in his community.”
