Missing Milford man found in Vermont camping shelter

MILFORD — The Milford man who Vermont police found early Sunday in a camping shelter along a hiking trail near Vermont's Mount Mansfield appeared to be physically fine, "but based on the information we had, we did send him to the hospital to be evaluated," a Vermont police chief said.

"He is OK," said Donald Hull, chief of the Stowe, Vt. police department, of Milford resident Theodore Chittem. But "when we found him early this morning around 4 a.m., we did send him to the hospital."

No one answered the phone Sunday at Chittem's home in Milford. Milford police could not immediately be contacted.

Chittem, 49, was last seen by relatives on March 24. Family and friends had not had any contact with Chittem and were concerned for his welfare, police have said.

Milford police investigators had information that Chittem frequently visited Vermont and New Hampshire and was an outdoor enthusiast. Detectives sent information to law enforcement agencies throughout the New England area requesting assistance in locating Chittem.

Chief Hull said Stowe police received information on Chittem earlier Saturday evening and found his car parked in a parking lot at the base of Mount Mansfield between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.

The road up the mountain "is closed in the wintertime" and "comes to a dead end...because of the snow," Hull said. But the area still is used for hiking and cross country skiing in the winter and a parking lot is open, mostly for people who go in during the day, he said.

Rescuers from the Stowe Police Department, Stowe Mountain Rescue and the Vermont State Police know, however, that "there are hiking shelters up in the mountain where people can stay at," and Chittem was found in one of them shortly after 4 a.m., he said.

"Phyically he was fine," Hull said. "He walked out with the rescue crews" and rescue crew members "brought him back down to the police department where we had an ambulance waiting."
