Investigators Friday afternoon found the body of a Wilmington woman who has been missing since early November. The body of Alma Lawson, 83, was discovered near the railroad tracks off 11th Street on Wilmington's Northside.

Clues to her location were first found by a law-enforcement training class from Cape Fear Community College, which was out doing field training Friday afternoon when they stumbled across the evidence, Wilmington police officials said.

Lawson, who lived in the Love Grove neighborhood, was last heard from around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, when she told a friend she was headed to her residence in the 1500 block of Stanley Street.

Lawson lived with her son, who reported her missing.

When she was last seen, the 5-foot-5-inch woman was wearing a lavender shirt, black pants and a black jacket. A family member said Lawson was believed to be experiencing the early signs of dementia.

A massive search soon after she was declared missing turned up no clues, and the area along the railroad tracks had been previously searched.

Last week, the Wilmington Police Department requested assistance from students in Cape Fear Community College's basic law enforcement training program to search for evidence, said CFCC spokesman David Hardin. CFCC had 17 students involved in the search for Lawson, Hardin said.

"It was a real-world training exercise for our students," he said.
