Authorities suspect foul play in the disappearance of Ken Mohler, 71, after he did not come home from work Thursday night.

Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid on Saturday said authorities do not have any new information after conducting a search and beginning an investigation Friday. Deputies suspended their search for Mohler on Friday night.

Reid said foul play is suspected and there is a possibility that he may have been abducted.

Mohler is a maintenance supervisor at Gregory Wood Products in Newton and returned to work about 4:30 Thursday afternoon to fix a leak, according to Tammy Pettry, his sister-in-law and pastor of Fresh Oil Ministries in Hickory.

Pettry said Mohler texted his wife at 7:30 Thursday, saying he was done, and texted his boss at 8:05, saying that the problem was solved. His wife, Wendy, expected him to arrive home by 8:30. The 8:05 p.m. text was the last time anyone has heard from him.

A co-worker found Mohler’s truck in the parking lot of Gregory Wood Products on Friday morning, with the keys in the ignition, according to Reid. The co-worker then called Mohler’s cell phone, and heard a phone ring nearby in the dirt. He then called 911. Authorities said Mohler’s cell phone and another set of keys were buried in the dirt near the truck.

Pettry said the dirt where the phone and keys were found was “scuffed up,” as if someone had kicked dirt up around them to hide them. Reid confirmed that it did appear someone tried to bury the keys and phone.

On Saturday, dozens of family members and friends were distributing flyers and going door to door in Newton and Conover looking for information on Mohler before rain came. They planned to resume their search later Saturday afternoon.

They were out early Saturday morning in the area near Gregory Wood Products, which is located at 2800 Woodtech Drive not far from the Catawba County Landfill, in muddy, swampy land looking for Mohler.

He’s the kindest, sweetest man,” said Pettry. “At 71, he was fighting to get custody of granddaughter. He’s surely missed. I know that.”

Mohler is described as a white male, 5 feet and 5 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He is bald, has hazel eyes and gray goatee. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and work boots.

If you have seen anyone fitting Mohler’s description or have any information about his disappearance, please contact the Catawba County Sheriff's Office at (828) 464-3112.
