URGENT: Missing child w autism
SHEFFIELD LAKE, Ohio -- July 24
Sidney Heidrick, age 4
Police continued searching late Friday for a 4-year-old boy who wandered away from his grandparents' home that afternoon.
Police dispatch said all officers were looking for the boy, Sidney Heidrick.
Hundreds of flashlight-carrying volunteers, some on foot and some riding bicycles, were searching for the child Friday evening in the Lorain County community. But after K-9 units joined the search later, officers asked volunteers to clear the area so the dogs could work.
Traffic also was diverted from the Lake Road area where the search was centered.
Police told volunteers that the boy has autism and likes playing hide-and-seek.
Police Chief Anthony Campo said the child weighs about 40 pounds and is 36 inches tall, with blond hair. Sidney is believed to be wearing an orange shirt and blue athletic shorts, with no shoes.
Campo said the boy wandered away from his grandparents' home in the 4800 block of Lake Road in Sheffield Lake about 4:30 p.m.
The Cleveland Division of the FBI assisted Sheffield Lake police in the search for the boy, according to spokeswoman Vicki Anderson. Other departments also were helping.
Law enforcement officials advised those searching for the boy to look in small places where a 4-year-old could hide, such as under porches and in bushes.
