AT-RISK #MISSING: Daniel Nerstrom, 30 - Libertyville, ILLINOIS (Army Veteran - distraught -

Days after he was reported missing, Libertyville police are continuing the search for a 30-year-old Army veteran who "is believed to be distraught."
Daniel Nerstrom was last seen around 6 p.m. Dec. 1, could be armed with a handgun and is emotionally endangered, from the Libertyville Police Department.
As of Wednesday evening, Libertyville police were planning to create a grid in a wooded area and send a team of officers and volunteers to search that area square by square on Thursday.
Friends say Nerstrom was forced to retire from the Army in 2009 due to a severe back injury and brain trauma that makes him lightheaded and confused at times. They also say Nerstrom suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, but he's not violent toward others.
"He's a genuine teddy bear. He's a big guy, but harmless," said Joneen Lannon, a Zion resident who said she is friends with Nerstrom's girlfriend.
Libertyville Police Lt. Bill Kinast said officers were using a bloodhound Wednesday to search for Nerstrom's tracks. Libertyville first borrowed the bloodhound from the Kane County Sheriff's Office yesterday after regular K9s lost the trail.
Wednesday would most likely be the last day the department attempts to find Nerstrom using dogs, Kinast said, because weather conditions after three days will have broken any scent.
Libertyville's fire department launched its water rescue boat into the Des Plaines River Tuesday morning to search for a body, but did not find one.
Kinast said all of Nerstrom's known friends have been interviewed, and police still believe the man left his home on foot without being picked up.
Nerstrom lives in Libertyville with his girlfriend of two years and her 4-year-old son. Police say Nerstrom was alone when he left home, and there was no argument. They believe he may have a gun because one of several guns he owns could not be found in his car or at his home.
When he disappeared, police say Nerstrom may have been wearing a black or green Carhartt-style jacket with several military patches, a grey Under Armor shirt, tan military-style boots and a camouflage skull cap with a red spider logo. He is 6-feet-1, weighs about 175 pounds and has blonde hair and blue eyes.
Police have learned that Nerstrom is experienced with the outdoors and enjoys camping, and are not ruling out the possibility that he's still alive, Kinast said. He also said there had been no reports of gun shots by the public.
Checks of Nerstrom's credit card and bank account showed no activity in the last few days.
Kinast said police departments in neighboring towns had been notified to search for Nerstrom, and none had reported seeing a man fitting his description.
Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to contact Libertyville Police at 847-362-8310.
